Are You Comparing Apples with Apples?

7 Oct 2017

When you book travel, the bottom line is usually the cost. We look at the best price we can get and get quotes from different agencies, as well as online, to find the cheapest price for our trip.

It’s great to consider your options, but you need to be careful. Make sure you are not comparing apples with oranges.

Big travel agent franchises often advertise fantastic prices on airfares to popular holiday destinations and when you look for a price comparison, you are given a more expensive price.

It is completely understandable that a person would book a flight on a low-cost airline that is advertised for an unbeatable price, rather than a full-service airline advertised at a higher price.

But, let’s look at the breakdown of a return flight to Phuket.

  • Agency A has a flight available for $765.

  • Agency B has a flight available for $639.

Flight A is fully inclusive – there are no extra costs. For your $765 you get:

  • 7kg carry-on luggage

  • 30kg check-in luggage

  • Meals

  • Entertainment

  • 33inch seating space

Flight B is not inclusive. For $639 you get:

  • 7kg carry-on luggage

  • 29inch seating space

If you want to add check-in luggage, entertainment, meals or in-flight vouchers, you could be looking at up to $900 in extra fees.

This example clearly demonstrates why it is so important to not look at flight costs just on face value. It is imperative that you look into the details, otherwise you could be considerably out of pocket for the inclusions you want.

When booking your flight, make sure you ask for information about what is included in each price you get. Look at all your inclusions, flight times, stop-overs and transit times. Make sure you are comparing apples and apples.

When you speak to your travel agent, let them know what is important to you and they will be able to find a cost-effective option without you having to sacrifice comfort or your hard-earned spending money. A good agent will give you the best option to suit your needs, first go!
